Sashings done!

All the applique sashings are now done!  Yippee!

Just three big blocks and four smaller blocks and this top will be done.

Here are a few close-ups of my border blocks.  Rail fence blocks beside the sashings and the same fabric beside the smaller blocks.  

In the corners are sixteen patch blocks.

Altogether, I'm very pleased with my version and I did take some liberties with the blocks!

This morning, hubby and I took a walk around our hill garden and one side of our home.  We are having rainy weather for the next several days and the rain last night took a beating on our plants.  Another couple of weeks and our gardens will be in full bloom.  The frost and cool temps we had earlier this month took it's toll on some plants that we didn't cover, but there is always next year.

Moss on bricks .... love that!  My hubby is always trying to scrape the moss off, but I love it as the moss gives an interesting look to the patio.

This is the view from our kitchen patio door.  What a treat to see the humming birds at the feeder.

Red Sampler - week 10

This is where my project is at!  Borders are almost done!  A few more blocks have been added to the center.  This is where I choose which blocks to do as my quilt will not have all of them.  More sashings have been done.  Another 3 weeks or so and then this top can be assembled.

Today, hubby and I will be putting up my red/neutral quilts.  My plan is for this coming February and June, all my red quilts will be ready for display.  So, I best get cracking with finishing up four tops that have been hanging around a bit too long.

Red Sampler

Work is progressing on my version of Bee In My Bonnet's "Red Sampler" and I'm quite pleased with how it is coming along.  The sashings give it an entirely different look.

Some of my days are being spent at our cottage and a lot of sewing has not been done.  You know, those lazy, crazy days of summer!    In between sessions of sitting on the porch and watching the hummingbirds, the otters in the lake, a huge buck deer on the other side of the lake, and one lone baby bunny,  my sister and I have been doing a bit of sorting and purging.  Might as well get that done now so that we have the rest of the summer to sit back and enjoy.  

On our way to our cottage last week, we were looking for the house that had a huge display of iris in their front yard and saw a sign that said "iris for sale".    Brake!  I went and chatted to the elderly man who turns out to be a collector of irises and bought five different kinds from him.  They are all nicely planted now on our hill.  Then, this morning, my hubby went to the recycle depot to drop off yard waste and he came home with a free box of yellow irises.  Win-win!  Those will be planted tonight after supper.   Next year there should be a wonderful display of irises on our hill!

Baby Blankets

June.  Half the year is almost gone by.  I wonder how much will get done this month?

In my aim to clear out some baby fabrics and my smaller pieces of batting scraps, three baby blankets for our local hospital NICU were made.  This time, all for boys.

In a clearing/cleaning out event, these heart blocks were found.    These blocks are probably about ten years old (perhaps even older) and never even made it onto my UFO list.  That is why they were such a surprise to find.  These blocks will find their way into more baby blankets.  These will be for girls, so more girly coloured heart blocks need to be made and these blue/green blocks can be mixed in.

Waiting in the wings are seven more blankets to be made up.  Each tray (on top of the bin) has all the parts for the blanket, except for the batting and some backings (which are ready to be cut up).  In the big bin are all small batting scraps which will be pieced and then all the blankets can be made and passed on.  I'm doing the birthing method so there are no bindings to do.  It is a bit trickier, but it works for me.  I will show how it is done when the next blanket is made.

It truly is interesting what has been found when I've been cleaning/sorting/purging lately.

Red Sampler Sashings

For the sashings in the Bee In My Bonnet Red Sampler quilt-along, this is what I've designed.  Love it!  Very simple, but so effective.  My version of her quilt-along will be so different.

All of the sashings are in this box which is my project to work on at the cottage.  All the pieces have been prepped and the sashings marked for placement .... I'm good to go to spend hours appliqueing!  There is plenty of time to work on them as there are another six weeks of blocks to make.  Since not all the blocks will be made, I can be selective on which blocks to make and include in my quilt. 

Now that this project is waiting stage, my "Prezzies" project was brought out again to work on.  More olive strips were added to the setting triangles (only 7 more to go) and in a few days borders can be added.  This project is getting so close to being finished.  Backing fabric already has been chosen and the batting will be Frankenpieced.   I love it when projects are zooming along!

Red Sampler

How many are doing Bee In My Bonnet's Red Sampler Quilt Along?

In the beginning, I wasn't going to, but my red fabrics were calling me!  Make me, make me!  LOL

So, I joined in and started making blocks.

I'm not going to make all the blocks, but will do my own thing and add in some applique to change the look.

This is where I'm at right now and my layout.  Six more weeks of blocks and then that will be it, but then I will be busy with applique in all the beige sashings.  The borders have already been decided how they will look.

So, how many other red quilts are on the go right now?

Four.  That is a nice even number .... wouldn't you say?!  The last three are UFO's.  Work on three UFO's and start a new project.  Why not!

Diamond Star

What joy to have this quilt done!  Perfect timing to enjoy for the summer months.

This photo was taken outside under our blooming crap apple tree.  It looks washed out in the sun, so some photos were taken in the shade.

The backing was a great way to use up fabrics that just needed to go .....
