Quilts for Kids

Another Winding Trails top using the pattern by Karen Griska Quilts.  I'm on a roll making kids quilts.  This will be a donation quilt for a women's shelter in a neighbouring town.  Personally, I think it is ugly .... but a child will love it.  I'm anxious to see this quilted up because a quilt changes once quilted.  My LAer has just finished quilting it and it just needs to be picked up.

Now, this top I love.  Berry Smoothie by Villa Rosa Designs and it also will be going to the same place.  This top used up a chunk of fabric for each block and I will be using this pattern again and again.

While making this top, a second set of blocks were made and all that needs to be done is sew those blocks together to make another top ... and that is what will be done to get those blocks into a top and to the LAer and then to the shelter.

Both of these tops were squirrels ...... LOL.  It's a good thing when those squirrels get completed.

Love it when I'm on a roll ....

"Candy Crush"

This was a fun quilt to make and there is another already cut out and just waiting for assembly.  This has become my go-to pattern for kiddie quilts.  This would also be good to make out of boy fabrics and plaids and stripes.

Some close-ups of fabrics used.

It's been a while!

My life is quite busy at the moment and will continue for another few more weeks.

Cottage season is winding down and my sister and I are trying to get as much done outside and inside while weather permits.  Our Canadian Thanksgiving is in a few weeks time and that is when we close down the cottage for the season.

The squirrel saga continues.  The cedar seeds have dried up and are now brown in colour.  We keep checking each time we go out to the cottage to see if the squirrel has stored away these seeds.  Come on, squirrel, you only have two more weeks to get it done.  Don't keep us in suspense!

Trees are changing colours.  The clouds in the back caught my attention.  They looked gorgeous against the darker blue.  A rain front was moving in.
A bit of sitting around a campfire before the rain started.  Not too many more of these this year.

Quilting wise .... not too much happening.

My 2" x 4" (finished) rectangle top is coming along.  The center is all sewn together and then I decided to make it slightly bigger by adding to pieces to three sides.

Waiting on the sidelines are more rectangles cut for a another quilt.  This will be the third one I've made using these fabrics.  Love them for kiddies!
My September binding challenge is slow going ..... binding will be cut and sewn on over the next few days as I do want to work on this quilt at the cottage this coming weekend.
This triangle project is slow going and I'm starting to lose interest.  I'm thinking a wall hanging size instead of a bigger project.  That is how my UFO numbers got so large.  A lot of interest and then they sort of fizzle out.
This one is very happy with her quilt that was gifted recently.

Sadly, this one had to have some dental work and a trip out-of-town was on the cards.  This quilt kept her warm.
I'm all caught up until next time.

Cherish your day, cherish your life!

What was she looking at?

On Monday, this week, I had family over for dinner.  This is the quilt that is hanging in our dining room right now.  I always have considered this our Xmas quilt and it gets hung up end of November.

As we were tidying up the table, my niece picked up her 14 month old daughter and when the baby looked at the quilt, she let out a big OHHHHHHH.  This photo would have been at her eye level.  What did she see that made her remark so?   My little niece doesn't say much, but this caught us by surprise.  My sister, niece and I started to chuckle.  Yep, another family member is hooked onto my quilts.
You have seen all my ribbons that I have acquired throughout the years.  Some people think I'm famous (I have to giggle at that) and some people think I'm really good at what I make.  Thank you for those thoughts.  The best reaction I have ever received was from my little grand niece.  If she was that impressed at her young age, well, I guess you are all right.

So, as I go about making this quilt (of course, I'm doing my own thing) for her ...
and as I add piece
after piece
after piece
and some more, what will her reaction be when she opens her gift?  Time will tell.  I'm anxious to find out.
Questions have been asked about my studio.  It is functioning but still in a transition stage.  In other words, it is a mess, but I can finally do some sewing.

The photos below are at different stages.  I so love bead board and I finally got some in my studio.
Shelves ready to store my bins.
 They are loaded.
Curtains help to hide the mess.  A bit more of sorting still needs to be done before I can call this section complete.
My sewing table has been changed around.
Against the window wall, there is 10 feet of cutting space.  My big ironing board is on one of the tables and it is so nice to use the full length of the board.  Just this change has made a huge difference in my life.  Things have gotten easier.  How do you like my window curtain?  A big piece of styrofoam does the trick for now.  The window frame needs to be painted and then I can add curtains.
 This wall is complete
My design wall is back in place and being used.
There is one more wall to paint (the wall on the right) and once that is done, then I can finish sorting.  I'm so happy with my paint colour.  It adds such charm to the room.
My stash has been used this past year and two bins were emptied into a third bin.  That was thrilling to see.  Two bins emptied.  Hallelujah!
Wait, Aunt Rosie don't get so thrilled just yet.  Holy scraps .... Houston we have a problem!   I'm awash with scraps ...

I can see a lot of sorting coming soon .... LOL .... oh well!

Pecfectly Pink Pony

This quilt was finished and gifted to my soon-to-be 4 yr. old niece.  She got it early instead of having to wait for her birthday.
This is how the hearts were quilted.

The center portion with the pony.  For the pony, I was stumped on how to quilt it.  So, this is very artsy with the circles and I love it.
Now, I wanted to show what this quilt looked like before washing.  Can you see all the meandering lines that were drawn using Crayola Washable Markers.  It looks like such a mess, doesn't it.  They all came out in the wash.
This pillowcase is perfect for her new quilt.

Pattern Source:  go here for a free pattern by designer Marinda Stewart
Size:  52" x 81" (before quilting size:  54-1/2" x 82-1/2")
This quilt has a combination of hand quilting and machine quilting.  Whatever quilting I could do well by machine was done by machine and the rest was done by hand quilting.  I've done both quilting types on the same quilt before and it works for me.

So, how long did it take me?  It was started on Apr. 2, 2015 and finished on Mar. 17, 2016.  Just shy of a year.  It was on the go for 10 months (sitting mostly in a bin) and then quickly finished in 5 days and 1 hour.  The 5 days was for the quilting and sewing down the binding and the 1 hour to finish up the embroidery.  Thank you to the reader that left me an interesting comment!  Let's put the time frame into perspective, eh!  :o)

This is what we spotted in our backyard last week.  A pileated woodpecker.  It was huge and it was odd to see it jumping from rock to rock looking for seeds.  They don't walk, they jump.
A closer look.  It's red head stood out so well against the white snow.  Beautiful.

Another top

This one is for my nephew.  He will get it for his birthday next year.  Just glad that it is done and ready for quilting.
I'm on a mission to get tops done.  At last count, there are close to 45 projects in different stages of completion.  That is way too many and I must buckle down and concentrate on getting those projects to completed tops.  I MUST ..... really, I must!

Have a great day!
